Ques 1. What is IIT JAM Exam?
IIT JAM is
Joint Admission test for MSc. It is an entrance test to get admitted in IITs,
NITs, or IISc to pursue M.Sc (Four Semesters), Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D, M.Sc.-M.Tech.,
M.Sc.-Ph.D Dual Degree & other courses.
IIT JAM exam
is conducted every year in the month of February. IIT JAM exam 2017 was
conducted on 12th February and it was organized by IIT Delhi. Result for IIT
JAM exam 2017 has already been declared. In 2018, JAM exam will be conducted in
the third week of February.
Ques 2. What are the advantages of IIT JAM Exam?
IIT JAM
(Joint Admission test for M.Sc.) is an all India entrance exam which allows
candidates to apply for IITs, IISERs, IISc, and NITs. Selection will be done
through All India Merit Rank System.
IIT JAM exam
can be given by the candidates with both basic sciences and applied sciences
degrees to pursue M.Sc (Four Semesters), Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D, M.Sc.-M.Tech., M.Sc.-Ph.D
Dual Degree & other courses.
IIT JAM
syllabus mainly includes topics that candidates usually study in their
bachelor’s degree programs.
Ques 3. What is the eligibility criteria for JAM exam? Can engineering students write IIT JAM exam?
Candidates
must satisfy these common eligibility criteria in order to write IIT JAM exam:
- Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree from Science stream from any recognized university.
- Both Indian as well as Foreign candidates are eligible.
- There is no age limit for IIT-JAM exam.
- Candidates appearing for their final year exams are also eligible.
- Candidates must have minimum of 55% marks for General & OBC and 50% marks for SC, ST categories in their Bachelor’s degree.
- Candidates also need to submit a physical fitness certificate at the time of admissions. If any candidate found unfit to pursue his/her Science course, will not be admitted to the institutes.
Ques 4. Can I bring a calculator during JAM examination?
No,
candidates are not allowed to bring the calculator with them. They will be
provided with the Online virtual calculator for the calculations.
Many
candidates are not aware of the Virtual Calculator. So, candidates must also
practice for the IIT JAM Virtual calculator.
Ques 5. What are the preparation tips to crack IIT JAM Exam?
Follow the
below preparation tips to crack IIT JAM Exam:

Start
your preparation 6–7 months before the exam. As you will get enough time for
the revision.
•
You
must know the syllabus, exam pattern and marking schemes for IIT JAM
Examination.
•
You
must be aware of the latest news, notifications and important dates for
IIT JAM Exam.
•
Create
a timetable with the distribution of subjects. It will help you to study the
different subjects according to the marks.
•
Try
to solve as many as IIT JAM Previous Years Papers and Mock Test Papers as it
will give you a clear idea about the difficulty level, pattern, & how to

Ques 6. What is the exam pattern for JAM Exam?
The exam is
divided into three sections:
Section A- 30 MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions)
of 50 marks: Out of a total of 30 questions, 10 questions are of one mark each
and 20 questions are of two marks each. There is negative marking of 1/3 mark
for each question answered incorrectly out of the one mark question and 2/3
marks are deducted for each incorrect question which is of two marks each.
There is no negative marking for any question left unanswered.
Section B- 10 MSQs (Multiple Select Questions) of
20 marks: Each correct answer in this section is awarded two marks. There is no
negative marking in this section.
Section C- 20 NAT (Numerical Answer Type) of 30
marks: Out of the total 20 questions,
first 10 questions are of one mark each and other 10 questions are of two marks each. There is no
negative marking in this section as well.
Duration for
the exam will be 3 hours.
Ques 7. For how many subjects a candidate can appear for IIT JAM Examination?
IIT JAM Exam
is conducted in seven subjects:

restriction for the number of attempts in IIT JAM Examination.

There
are total of 31 IIT JAM participating institutes which include 13 IITs, 1 IISc,

Ques 10. Why should I choose three examination cities?
Generally, you will be allotted a center in the examination
city of your first choice. Only in cases, where it becomes difficult to
accommodate you in the examination city of your first choice, your other two
choices will be considered. A candidate is required to fill his/her primary as
well as secondary choices, but should remember that because of operational
constraints, the JAM committee reserves the right to add a new city or remove
an existing one, and allot a city that may not be any of the three choices of a
candidate.
